Tori Amos at Grammy. Singer, songwriter and producer, multi Grammy-nominated, Tori Amos is one of the artists hard to fit into a specific genre: piano-rock, alternative-rock, art-pop, art-rock, electronic, pop or classical baroque – all these styles are familiar to her. Her interesting and complex career is based on a multi-cultural education, rigor of classical music and, not least, a heavenly gift: an unmistakable voice of mezzo-soprano. In over 33 years of career, Tori had no less than 13 international tours, over 1,000 concerts and released 14 studio albums.
Myra Ellen Amos (Tori Amos) was born on August 22, 1963, in North Carolina. She is the youngest daughter of a Methodist pastor of Scottish-Irish origins and a household with Cherokee origins. Little Tori fell in love with the piano since the age of two years old. “My first memory is linked to a grand piano, black, at whose keys could barely reach. Mom told me that I was only two and a half when I started singing, perched on a thick book with phone numbers ” she said in an interview. It is no wonder that at five years began to write, or was noticed and received a scholarship to the Peabody Conservatory of Music, where he studied piano up to 11 years. But Tori, too in love with rock music, lost the scholarship for Classical Studies. “I do not like to read sheet music. I preferred to play music by ear and I loved fashionable music. That was not a good thing in my teachers opinion.” confesses in the autobiographical book “Piece by Piece”, published in 2005.
But even if she abandoned the study of classical music, her family continued to encourage her, and even 14 years was singing in bars, accompanied by her austere father who pushed her from behind to follow his dream. First steps towards career has made in 1977, when she won a talent contest. In 1986, formed his own band, Y Kant Tori Read, together with Matt Sorum drummer, future member of Guns N ‘Roses and Velvet Revolver, but the group fell apart after the first album. Because was pressed by record label to produce a new material and do not have time to form a new band, Tori took up his first solo album, “Little Earthquakes” (1992). Designed as a confession, the disc contained biographical stories about the religious education of the artist, the struggle to find her identity and about the terrible experience at just 21 years old when she was raped by a fan.
Tori conquer slowly, the musical world. First Grammy nomination get in 1995, thanks to her second album, “Under the Pink” (1994). However, the frequent misunderstandings with producer discs house and numerous personal tragedies overshadow his career.
The heyday has reached a maximum in the mid 2000s, but the fierce competition from the pop-rock music scene, the emergence of a new type of dive, who do more shows (like Rihanna, Beyonce and Lady Gaga) have thrown her into some obscurity.
